There are a lot of surprises when Magento has released… 5 new versions at the same time (on November 28, 2018), including Magento 2.1.16, Magento Commerce 22.214.171.124, and Magento Open Source 126.96.36.199, and most remarkably, Magento 2.3.0 and Magento 2.2.7.
Magento 2.3.0 Release: It is worth the wait!
In the last blog post, we have analyzed the Magento 2.3.0 beta version and saw a lot of interesting features. And on the official Magento 2.3.0 version released today, those features are even much greater since a significant number of bugs were fixed, plus several useful updates.
Magento promised that Magento 2.3.0 not only satisfies the merchants’ need but also enhance the experience of the developers. Let’s discover what are in this version and see whether Magento did what they said…
Progressive Web App (PWA) Studio
It might be true to say that the PWA has become one of the hottest new technologies from the beginning of 2018. It brings about an amazing app-like experience (such as push notification, ability to add on home screen, fullscreen) for the users and some unique features like offline mode, searchable by the search engines, and very fast loading speed. Magento has seized this opportunity and added the PWA Studio in Magento 2.3.0, including useful tools to facilitate the process of developing a PWA for your store.
Multi-Source Inventory (MSI)
The major purpose of MSI is to enhance the efficiency of store operation, by allowing the merchants to monitor the inventory of all physical locations in only one admin panel. More specifically, the admin will be able to:
- Integrating the store with any third-party inventory management systems
- Assigning certain products with specific quantities to every fulfillment source (e.g.: warehouse, store, distribution center, shipping carrier…)
- Tracking the changes in inventory from all sources
- Setting the priority rules to each inventory source
So, is this a meaningless feature if the store has only one inventory source?
Actually, no. The store owner can still benefit from it thanks to the inventory reservation system, which will notify you of changes in the stock of hot items in your store when those are added to the shopping cart to raise the conversions as a result.
Page Builder (For Magento Commerce Only)
It seems that Magento was learning from… WordPress when developing this new future. Similar to WordPress, this feature enables the store owners to create and launch new pages or update current pages’ content on their website even when they don’t have technical skills.
As you can see, there is a grid to help you to easily add and arrange all elements (e.g.: text, heading, buttons, divider, row, tabs…) in one page. Moreover, you can freely add images by selecting from the media gallery or add some widgets (e.g: new arrivals, featured products, deals…) into the pages. Furthermore, you are allowed to preview your “creation” before publishing it.
What Is More?
Besides the PWA Studio, MSI, and Page Builder, Magento 2.3.0 provided some important updates for GraphQL, Magento Shipping, Bulk Web APIs, Declarative Scheme, and made a lot of improvements in the indexing performance and security, and added support for PHP 7.2.
Magento 2.2.7 Release: Sooner than expected!
We guess that many people looked forward to the release of Magento 2.3.0 so much and had no thought of the same-day release of Magento 2.2.7.
While upgrading your site to Magento 2.3.0 is similar to building a new house, upgrading to Magento 2.2.7 is more like throwing rubbishes out of your house and adding some decoration stuff.
In summary, in Magento 2.2.7, there are 30 pivotal improvements for product security, more than 150 core code fixes, and over 350 pull requests submitted by the Magento community. If you want to know those changes in detail, click here to view the Release Notes.
Should We Upgrade To Magento 2.3.0 or Magento 2.2.7?
It’s undeniable that there are various interesting features in Magento 2.3.0; however, not all of the Magento 2 stores will need these functions. Moreover, it seems that there are still lots of bugs unsolved, and not many developers trying this version.
Therefore, we think that it’s better, for now, to upgrade to Magento 2.2.7 and wait for several months until Magento 2.3.0 is stable.
