By default, there are 6 product types in Magento 2: Simple, Configurable, Virtual, Downloadable, Grouped & Bundle Products. They are the same as in Magento 1. If you are using Magento 1, I guess you are immensely familiar with these types of product. However, if you are still curious and want to understand more about them, here you go. This blog will give you a detailed description for each product type.
1. Simple Product
This is the most widely used product type in Magento store. A simple product is a physical item with a single SKU. Simple products can be sold individually, or as a part of configurable, grouped or bundle products.
In reality, simple products are used in most of stores, for example: a book, a bag, a watch,…
2. Configurable Products
A configurable product appears to be a single product with lists of options for each variation. However, each option represents a separate, simple product with a distinct SKU, which makes it possible to track inventory for each variation.
A popular example for configurable product is a T-shirt. For buying one T-shirt, customers can choose different color or different size.
3. Virtual Product
Virtual products do not have a physical presence, and are typically used for such things as services, warranties, and subscriptions. These types of products don’t need to be shipped, delivered or downloaded.
4. Downloadable Product
A digitally downloadable product that consists of one or more files that are downloaded. The files can reside on your server or be provided as URLs to any other server.
Examples: Software, Video, Ebook,…
5. Grouped Product
Grouped Product is simply a group of single products. You can offer variations of a single product, or group them for a promotion. The products can be purchased separately, or as a group.
In reality, you can use this product to offer promotion for customers who want to buy many products at one time. Or you can use it for a set of product. For example: a set of furniture, a set of luggage as below:
6. Bundle Product
A bundle product lets customers “build their own” from an assortment of options. The bundle could be a gift basket, computer, or anything else that can be customized. Each item in the bundle is a separate, standalone product.
